Evening all, my first post

Recently turned 60 and retired. Time to look at my finances now with no more wages. Heard that the fee increases in April and its on my list of cuts. I pay by direct debit and have done for many, many years. They obviously have all my details on record. Is there anything that applies  to my set of circumstances I need to be aware of.

Just make sure you cancel with them (probably best done by phone, because the online forms have lots of "mandatory" fields, which means giving information you probably can't/won't want to give), before cancelling the DD.

After that, have no further interactions with them.

If You do phone them Make sure You Record the Phone Call and keep it 'Safe' on a device  ;)

I intend to watch catch up, Netflix etc. I want to keep my TV, DVD player and PS3. Thought we might try and not watch live TV for a week and see if it works.

Not watching live TV - once you succeeded then there is no turning back, gave up the live stuff over thirteen years ago, life improved drastically.
No desire to watch the live stuff again not even the news....

If you are paying by weekly/monthly DD, then there is a good chance you will be paying six months in advance. i.e. when your current licence expires, you will have already paid for six months on your next.

If you are cancelling, you may be due a refund.

Thanks for the tips. I just dug out the licence and the payments. Its monthly direct debit. If I stop paying on the first of March that's all I owe. We are going to start a 7 day trial in the morning to see if we can do without the BBC and live TV.

Well we have not watched any live TV for 7 days. I missed the news but now use the radio and have found I can catch up on all 4. I still have the aerial connected but have tuned the TV to come on at a radio station. I can obviously still receive live TV easily but I am not watching, or recording live TV, or using BBC i player. I have closed my i player account on my PC.
I sent my notification to TV licensing tonight. It goes as a query! and I had to go through multiple screens. Anyway at least I have had an email confirmation of my query. I have also cancelled the DD tonight.
Anything else I need to do?

If at all possible, I'd suggest not listening to the radio via the TV.

With the aerial plugged in, it'd be very easy for them to bring up a live TV channel.

Preferably get yourself a DAB radio.

I've got one of these, from Aldi. Price was £15.

I do listen to it now on a lovely new DAB rechargeable portable radio.. (bought with money saved from not paying the TVL   ;) )

My advice would be to pretend to be BBC/TVL doing an 'inspection' of your 'equipment'.
If you cant find a 'live broadcast' then you will be safe.. even from a Search Warrant.. rare though these are.

I thought I would miss the 'live news' I haven't in thirteen years, weather look outside or check on line for other places. I don't even miss the shipping forecast, my signal to go to bed.....
I don't actually 'miss anything on TV, well not strictly true - I do miss the Old grey whistle test  :sad: and I haven't listened to a BBC radio station for years.

I use my 'savings' for my illness, I have GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome, I have a soft-spot for musical instruments.
Just bought a another Les Paul for the eight year old to learn on...., the six year old want 'drums' :unsure:

But very good point about a inspection test -  a good sanity check.
