That's the difference between us , you're also anti-BBC , I'm just anti-tvlicence.
[/quote]

I wear that label with pride.

Yes, I am anti-current BBC, the BBC has blotted its copy book and covered up crimes so many times, that I feel I cannot support such an organisation.

I'm also anti-licence, not just on the grounds of being anti-current BBC, but it doesn't sit comfortably with me that the state imposes laws to aid a private company to collect an unfair tax with menace and use that money to run it bloated unaccountable self.

The BBC of the 60's was a far different beast to the one that
grew in the 70's onward. I cannot pinpoint exactly when the BBC changed from Auntie to its current rancid form.

The BBC has a choice when it's comes to its own 'iconic' content produce what people want and it can sell to the market or produce something it feels carries messages, but also turns some people off that content and so loses the large audience share the BBC are so desperate to attract.

If the BBC went subscription and survived in a different form, I may look at what it produced and subscribe my self, if I thought they offered any value to my life, currently they offer nothing of value and they use state sponsored threats to encourage people to pay.

I haven't watched Dr Who for decades, but from what you describe
It appears the BBC have clearly lost the plot or cannot find plot writers worthy of half decent science fiction.

I'm sure of the 1.5million who watched it some where drooling into their evening meal at some home or getting excited about which flag the Dr was going to display this week, some may have been hoping for a return of the Daleks or other quality villains.
I lost hope a long time ago.

BARB figures never tell us the true make up of the viewers.

Still, it's nice to know some have a little faith in the BBC returning to a more Auntie status and that makes these forums interesting.

Quote from: Cornucopia on July 22, 2025, 01:35:22 PMReading that thread and thinking a bit more about the scenario, I think I would initially tell BBC/TVL that the property was straightforwardly "No Licence Needed" (as opposed to empty or let).   And then I'd let the property without a TV installed.

Anyone staying at the property would be free to use their own devices for TV as per the rules for No Licence viewing or the portable equipment concession for people with home Licences.

That's possibly a bit more helpful to the OP.

The house I rent is for Airbnb so I have a TV for people. It has no ariel and hasn't for years, I've gone as far now to remove ALL ariel points in the house, not just putting a face plate over them, but plastering over them! They are never being used again

I don't have any BBC apps installed on the TV/Roku and I've never had one person complain about not having live TV in the house.

One thing that happened to me the other day, I was given an 'interactive advert' on my phone for BBC iplayer, I looked at it an thought, I've never seen one of these before, then the thought came over me...... `I don't have a license so I can't interact with it`

I'm not Jim, but I'm not anti-BBC as such: To paraphrase Lucy Connolly, the BBC can destroy itself for all I care

I think the BBC fosters public resentment because it knows most people wouldn't subscribe if given a choice.

Quote from: hunny1234 on August 02, 2025, 10:00:33 PMPerhaps, but they will have to justify a 50% increase on average for most broadband users. Not sure how they will pull that one off just for the BBC and given the cost of living and everything else going up. not to mention the 'tension' currently going on surrounding immigration - which is, I think, likely to turn very violent soon.

As far as switching off the broadcast network, this article is quite interesting especially if you didn't know about Arqiva:

Not entirely surprised. GB News has reached the top spot for news for similar reasons to Reform becoming the most popular political party and Starmer is the most hated PM in living memory. Thatcher was polarising, sure, but she wasn't as almost universally hated as Starmer.

Well, if they do turn off traditional TV, then I assume that they will have some form of subscription model ready in time, IMHO I think they are gearing up for a universal tax on broadband.....

Currently, one needs to set up an account to watch iPlayer, so, say I don't set up an account I shouldn't be charged a licence fee.

Maybe, this would also solve the triple lock problem, drive the oldies into an early grave...

Just think, of the power savings,  But I assume they are still keeping DAB and FM so will need those masts...
